Frequently Asked Questions

How does someone get added to the list to receive meals?
They should call the Enrichment Services Program (ESP) supervisor, Arlyn Sanchez at 323-0095 and indicate
that they need to participate in the Meals on Wheels program. She will meet with them and find a church that
can deliver to them. She requires the following information about every applicant:  a copy of something
proving income, a copy of their Social Security card, a copy of a picture ID, completion of two forms listing
personal information like address, phone #, and monthly expenses.  Each year the recipient must complete
a form verifying their personal information and income.

How much do the meals cost?
$3 for senior citizens and the disabled. $4 for everyone else. However, a reduced amount of $2 is charged
for meals delivered by a church.

Who pays for the meals?
St. Mark receives a bill each month for the total number of meals delivered, based on $2 per meal. This
averages about $700. We ask recipients to reimburse the church if they are able. Currently, 60% of our
recipients reimburse St. Mark for the cost of their meals.

Where do we get the meals?
The ESP kitchen, inside Woodall Elementary on 43rd Street in Columbus.

When do we deliver meals?
Every weekday, except federal holidays, at lunchtime.

How can I become a part of this ministry?
Call Hanna Webster at 571-9916 if you are interested in delivering. She will send you an information
packet and ride with you on your first delivery day. Most people deliver only once a month.

What do I do if I’m delivering and no one comes to the door?
Occasionally, a recipient may not be home at lunchtime. Most will leave a note with instructions on where
to put the meal. If you think no one is home, put the meal in a sack (it’s good to carry extra grocery sacks
in the car, for this reason) and hang it on the doorknob. This will keep the ants and critters out of it until
someone gets home.

What do I do if I’m delivering and the recipient is hurt?
If the recipient has fallen, is hurt or needs medical attention DO NOT try to move or help them up by
yourself. We don’t want you to get hurt too. Call 911. If it is not an emergency you may call the contact
person on the schedule (if one is listed) or call Hanna. Hanna has emergency contact information for most
recipients.

What do I do if a recipient gives me a check?
Some recipients would rather give their money directly to a volunteer instead of mailing it to the church.
You can put their check in the offering plate on Sunday, bring or mail it to the church office.

What do I do if a recipient wants to make a change?
Sometimes a recipient wants to have a different type of milk or tells you that they will be out of town for a
few days. Call Hanna with this information and she will make adjustments to the schedule and let the other
volunteers know.

What do I do if I can’t deliver on my regular day?
Try to swap with someone else on your route. If this is not possible, call Hanna. She will try to find
someone to cover your day.
