Mission and Ministry

The committees listed below are where the bulk of ministry happens at St. Mark.  Each group has a different part of the church's mission statement that it focuses on.  Participating in these ministries is as easy as asking about them, marking an interest in them on your C.A.R.E. Card at one of the worship services, or e-mailing one of the leaders.  Don't hesitate.  The gifts and graces God has blessed you with is just what is needed to fulfill the call on St. Mark to Worship, Love, Reach, Teach, and Serve.

Worship
Chairperson: Kay Gorday

There are a variety of tasks this committee is responsible for: setting up of the worship space on Sunday morning, making sure guests are greeted warmly, coordinating Communion and putting together seasonal worship services

Prayer
Chairperson: Carla Askew

Prayer Ministry is a vital and core ministry at St. Mark.  Vigils for church members going through tough times are held often.  Participating in the prayer ministry of Sunday morning worship and putting together St. Mark's involvement in the National Day of Prayer are also tasks of this committee.

Congregational Fellowship
Chairperson: Emily Miller

This committee is responsible for many of the fellowship activities throughout the year that gather the church family together.

Evangelism
Chairperson: John Hagler

This ministry is tasked with looking for ways to reach out to the local community with the saving message of Jesus Christ.

Church and Society
Chairpersons: Jim and Aina Cummins

The primary focus of Church and Society is on local missions - to join God where He is at work in the Columbus community.  We endeavor to show His love to all people by partnering with local institutions and agencies such as:

South Columbus UMC: We collect food for needy families, including hams and accompaniments for Thanksgiving, back-to-school supplies, toys for their Christmas toy give-away.

Open Door Community House: We help provide items for their Homeless Showering Program, Thanksgiving food baskets, etc.

Our House: We collect back-to-school supplies for this local site of the South Georgia Methodist Children's Home.

Teen Challenge: We provide small gifts of encouragement for Valentine’s Day for each of the residents.  We also provide hams and food for Thanksgiving.

Dignity-U-Wear: We are sent brand new clothing three times a year which are then distributed to the above four institutions.

Sound Choices Pregnancy Clinic: We participate in their annual "Baby Bottle Boomerang" which collects funds to help women choose life for their unborn child.

Missions
Chairperson: Betty Reed

The participants in this committee are very active in serving the local community and the world.  Medical Mission trips to South and Central America are staples of the church calendar.  They also support the budgets of many local mission agencies.  With the purchase and stocking of the Emergency Response Trailer, the St. Mark Missions Committee will be able to respond quickly to any disasters that strike the region.
